Growing Like a Tree – NPL at Ishara Foundation

We at Nepal Picture Library are very excited to be part of “Growing Like a Tree” an exhibition curated by Sohrab Hura and presented by Ishara Arts Foundation, along with so many friends and colleagues from the region. The exhibition is from 20th Jan – 20th May 2021.

For the exhibition, NPL dug deeper into the lives of two amazing women – Sushila Shrestha and Shanta Manavi from the Feminist Memory Project.

Here’s a short blurb about the exhibition titled “UNDERGROUND BIOGRAPHIES”.

“During the thirty-year period between 1960-1990, when the royal family of Nepal took direct control of the government after outlawing the democratically elected parliament, many political parties took their activities underground. The underground network provided the opportunity for several Nepali women to abandon traditional roles and create new possibilities for themselves by joining the clandestine political movements. We ask two such women, Sushila Shrestha and Shanta Manavi, to reminisce about their underground passages into The Communist Party of Nepal, which is the current ruling party. Their memories shed light on a radically different moment in the Party’s history.”
